High distinction: Gesundheitshaus Dortmund wins the B!WRD award
We won! The New Health Center in Dortmund has been awarded the B!WRD prize by the Federal Association of Independent Real Estate and Housing Companies (BFW). The award ceremony took place on Thursday evening in Berlin.
The Neue Gesundheitshaus is one of the most significant examples of German architecture from the 1950s. It has been extensively renovated by Landmarken AG and revitalized with a mix of uses. The project prevailed against strong competition in the commercial category. In addition to exciting new buildings, other outstanding revitalization projects such as the NetWorkHub Dresden and the SHED in Berlin were also nominated.
"A very complex, but really beautiful and important project for Dortmund," says project manager Sylvia Friederich, member of the Landmarken management team. "Thanks go to our passionate project team, who did a great job. The perseverance paid off!"
With its revival, the 'New Health Center' became a hotspot
Although completely preserved, the city's health center had clearly aged after 70 years of official use. In keeping with the spirit of its architect Will Schwarz, the qualities and treasures of this post-war icon in Dortmund were revealed and completely reinterpreted through thorough renovation. In the striking ensemble of five buildings, Landmarken has established a new urban mix of uses, including a design hotel, daycare center, apartments, and innovative office concepts—a masterstroke under the constraints of historic preservation. "Sustainable portfolio development is an important component of our corporate strategy," says Landmarken CEO Jens Kreiterling. "We assume ecological and social responsibility and contribute to the successful transformation of our cities."
With its revitalization, the "New Health Center" has become a pilgrimage site for 1950s architecture and a new hotspot that enlivens this downtown location at all hours of the day. The sustainable transformation not only preserves the building fabric, but also contributes to unsealing by recultivating the inner courtyard from a parking lot to a green space. Where cars used to park on gray asphalt, daycare children now play in the green. With its artistic, light-flooded interior and citizen-friendly health facilities, the Dortmund Health Center became a meeting place for the city from the late 1950s onwards. "We have taken up this history: today it is a meeting place for free spirits, city travelers, and children," says Sylvia Friederich. With a modern AOK customer center, the topic of health has also been revisited.
The B!WRD is the BFW's award for small and medium-sized businesses and their creativity, perseverance, and innovative strength. It recognizes special achievements in the German real estate landscape and draws the attention of decision-makers from politics and the industry to the best projects in the German real estate industry.
