Start of construction in Bonn: Groundbreaking ceremony for Landmarken AG's "Green Canyon"
The landmark project "Green Canyon" in Bonn's federal district is under construction. Mayor Katja Dörner and Landmarken CEO Jens Kreiterling personally broke ground at the official groundbreaking ceremony. The approximately 7,100 square meter site will provide around 18,000 square meters of rental space for offices, restaurants, and more.
The quality of the urban design was ensured by an architectural competition, with the winning design submitted by the Cologne-based firm caspar. It envisages two triangular structures facing each other, with a diagonal "canyon" in the middle as the central design element. "We are absolutely convinced of this location and are creating a particularly smart and sustainable building duo here," says Landmarken project manager Peter Eichelmann. "The 'Green Canyon' will offer the best opportunities for digital and communicative work and is sure to be in high demand."
The architecture of the ensemble, which is planned as an office campus but could also be used for other purposes, such as a daycare center, promotes dialogue with its many meeting places, thus creating a place for people to come together. A roof terrace and a public restaurant with an outdoor terrace will also contribute to this. "The project is a good example of the high urban planning quality in the federal district and is characterized above all by sustainability," says Bonn's mayor Katja Dörner. "I am delighted that Landmarken is officially kicking off construction today with this groundbreaking ceremony."
The result will be a pair of buildings that will significantly reduce CO2 emissions during construction and operation thanks to natural materials and a sustainable energy concept with energy monitoring and building automation. The large-scale solar panels on both roofs will provide most of the electricity supply. The green roofs and outdoor areas with climate-resistant perennials, grasses, and shrubs create plenty of space for greenery. Sustainability will be certified by the DGNB (German Sustainable Building Council) Gold Certificate.
Following the demolition of the existing buildings, work is now underway on dismantling the two lower floors of the former underground car park, which has a total of three floors. The new two-story underground car park will have bicycle and car parking spaces, many of which will be equipped with e-charging points, as well as showers and changing facilities for cyclists. The civil engineering work will take a total of approximately one year.
